English III

English III covers a diverse area.  We study American literature, complete a unit of grammar, develop writing skills, increase vocabulary development, and read a classic novel. We also prepare for the ACT test in the late winter months.  The year flies by in this class!  While reading the literature, we learn about several American writers such as Dickinson, Emerson, Hawthorne, Irving, Franklin, and Edwards, just to name a few.  We read poems, origin myths, stories, speeches, political documents, and plays. In the spring, we read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.  We also do a project with that story.

The third quarter of the year is spent learning the rules of grammar.  A step up from 2600, the English I grammar program, 3200 is based on the same ideas only with more complexity.  Students complete frames as well as apply the rules they learn to assignments and practice worksheets.  A test follows each unit.

"There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth."

"It's lovely to live on a raft. We had the sky up there, all

speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened."

-from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
